Fairport Convention in Kinross

We went to see Fairport Convention in Kinross last night - Backstage at the Green Hotel, the first time either of us had been there and it turned out to be a great venue for a gig. We were right in front of the stage and the venue had a really intimate atmosphere, perfect for Fairport. This is the seventh (or eighth? not sure) time I've seen them and they were on great form. I got a few passable photos, without flash.

Fairport have recently released an album of favourite tracks, 'By Popular Request', in new recordings, including Sandy Denny's song Fotheringay - there's a youtube clip from earlier in this winter's tour here (not great sound quality though - better off buying the album). It's now on the car stereo. Here's another clip - ' Matty Groves'

Remaining dates on the tour are here.Link

Smaller venues are definitely better! Another gig I really enjoyed was when they played Yales Central Station in Wrexham, about 8 years ago - shame Yales don't do much folk/folk rock nowadays. Around the same time, I saw Richard Thompson, Waterson Carthy, Eliza Carthy, John McCusker & friends (inc. an impromptu appearance by Kate Rusby), and John Renbourn with Jacquie McShee - all at Yales.

Focus are playing at the Green Hotel on 30th May, so I think that will be my birthday treat for this year!

One of these days I'll get to Cropredy in the summer, maybe next year if Glyn can get the landrover camper conversion finished.

In the meantime, I recommend the new album - one that will be a constant companion on long car journeys.
